Saunemin Grade School talk

On January 18 I had the honor to speak to the Saunemin Grade School class of Susie Garrett, the grand-daughter of John Rodino of Pontiac. John was a great member of our museum and was the World War II radioman of Audie Murphy, the most highly decorated soldier of the war. I took our museum's mannequin of Mr. Rodino with his uniform and decorations for the students to see. Some students have already encouraged their parents to visit our museum. Great students, very attentive and curious with many questions! Thanks to Saunemin Grade School 3rd and 4th grade classes!

Heyworth High School visit

Heyworth High School Advanced Placement history students visited our museum on January 17. Led by their teacher, Jennifer Weaver, these students had some very original questions about the social and psychological aspects of military service. Each student interviewed at least 5 of our veterans for their project. We found them very well informed and interested and enjoyed speaking with them. We look forward to another visit by next years seniors!

Astoria High School visit

The War Museum hosted the senior Astoria High School history classes on January 12. This is the third consecutive year that Doug Banwart, history teacher, has brought his students to visit us. Brought? Yes, he drives the bus too! It is always a pleasure to have our veterans speak with these enthusiastic history students. Astoria High School holds the record of the furthest distance travelled to our museum - over 140 miles! Following the museum visit, another tradition was accomplished - the enjoyment of pizza by all at Mario's - the best in Pontiac, if not all of Illinois. Thanks to Doug, his wife, and his students. We look forward to your fourth visit next year!

Juan Ruiz Speaks to History Teachers

Our museum was proud to sponsor a presentation by Juan Ruiz of Chenoa IL at the McLean County Museum of History last Friday, January 28. Juan is a former Army Ranger with two tours in Iraq and two tours in Afghanistan. He spoke about his service and his trip to the Pentagon this past summer to attend a Medal of Honor Ceremony at the Pentagon and illustrated his talk with a PowerPoint presentation of slides and video. His audience of history teachers from across Illinois was very appreciative. Thanks Juan!

Today on the 67th Anniversary of D-Day, we honor and remember America's sons of 1944 who landed in Normandy, France to begin the liberation of Europe after 5 long years of Nazi occupation. Our founder, Dal Estes, landed in the second wave on Omaha Beach,"Bloody Omaha", and returned 50 years later to return a flag captured from a German bunker. He proudly wore his uniform every day in Normandy, and from the respect and love he received from the local people, he was inspired to found our museum almost seven years ago to honor our current military personnel as well as our veterans. From that dream, we have been visited by Americans from every state and people from 50 countries as well as countless school field trips. Thanks to our volunteers, members and supporters are we expand our reach and influence in Central Illinois.

This 13 minute video is hosted on the GreatAmericans.com website and includes a recounting by ex-Sgt Dal Estes of his landing on D-Day. It is dedicated to all those who have served or are currently serving our country around the world.

Teacher Workshop - June 20

The Livingston County War Museum is proud to announce that it will host a Teacher Workshop entitled "In Our Own Backyard: Community Resources That Work" on Monday, June 20 from 8:15 - 9:445 am.

Sponsored by Regional Office of Education #17 in Bloomington-Normal IL, 30 teachers from McLean and Livingston County will travel by bus to learn about museum resources available for their classrooms in the fall. All of our veterans, from World War II to the present, will be on hand to help explain how students benefit when they interact with them on fieldtrips surrounded by hands-on exhibits of America at war. Our museum has joined 49 other museums in Illinois and over 1000 nationally to become a "Blue Star Museum". This program, sponsored by the National Endowment for The Humanities, promotes free visits to museums to our active duty military personnel and their families. Although we do not charge admission to the public (but like donations!), this partnership allows us more contact and publicity with our military families. We are here to honor them and all veterans everyday!

This student took several minutes to read a fascinating, historic letter describing the brave death during World War II
of an Australian soldier, Alex Bell. It was written by a friend in a Japanese prisoner of war camp to Mrs. Bell describing her son's bravery in the face of starvation and death. Mystery: We received this letter without any documentation of its origin or donor.

Vets Seminar (VIBES) At City Hall

The first Pontiac VIBES Seminar will be held Friday, March 11 from 2 - 4 pm at the Pontiac City Hall across from the War Museum. VIBES stands for Veterans Information Benefits and Employment Seminar. This is a free opportunity for all veterans, family members or vet employers to receive information concerning any and all benefits or employer responsibilities. Museum Vets Win 2011 Pontiac Volunteer Award

20 volunteers from our museum were named 2011 Volunteers of the Year by the Pontiac Area Chamber of Commerce. "This group of volunteers has done so much toward preserving our history, sharing with others and educating. They are what makes Pontiac work," said Cheri Lambert, executive director of the Chamber. Our volunteers will be honored at the Chamber of Commerce 94th Annual Banquet at the Pontiac Elks Lodge on Thursday evening, March 10. "Not Forgotten" Statue New to Museum

You are invited to see the new woodcarved statue "Not Forgotten" in our museum on loan from reknowned Bloomington Il artist Rick Harney. Rick is the sculptor of the bronze Abraham Lincoln statue on Pontiac's downtown Courthouse Square and also has done a seated Lincoln on the grounds of the McLean County Museum of History.

We have placed the "Not Forgotten" woodcarving in a prominent and logical position in our museum.

It is in the center of our main room, gazing at the stories, uniforms and medals of two soldiers of World War II from our area.

In January, our museum participated in a conference entitled "Teaching World History in a Global Society" held at the McLean County Museum of History in Bloomington IL. It was attended by 120 Central Illinois history teachers. War Museum members presented two sessions: Korea and Vietnam
(Jack Murphy and David Estes) and Desert Storm (Hugh Roop of the Pontiac police and Charlie Summers of the Illinois State University police). We thank the McLean County Museum for their invitation again this year.

HAPPY 110th BIRTHDAY TO OUR OLDEST WWI VETERAN

Today is the 110th birthday of America's last remaining World War I veteran, Mr. Frank W. Buckles. He still considers it his duty to represent his fellow soldiers from what was then called the Great War. He enlisted in the Army when he was 21 and drove ambulances in England and France and guarded German prisoners. Mr. Buckles was a prisoner himself of the Japanese for three years during World War II in the Philippines. There are only two other remaining World War I vets in the world - both in the United Kingdom.

Mr. Buckles lives at Gap View Farm in Charles Town, West Virginia. When asked about the secret of his long life, he replied: "Hope...When you start to die, don't."

We send our best wishes and utmost respect today to our last remaining doughboy of World War I.

Museum joins new organization

Our museum has recently joined the AMM - Association of Midwest Museums, headquartered in St. Louis MO. The AMM has member museums in 12 Midwestern states. We have been an active member of the IAM - Illinois Association of Museums, headquartered in Springfield, since our opening in 2004.

PLEASE READ - Honoring the Tammen Brothers

One of the most recent additions to our museum is a display of the uniforms and stories of the Tammen brothers. Hank and Dena Tammen of Flanagan Il sent three of their four sons to war. John Tammen was killed by a Japanese mortar round in the Philippines. His family was notified on April 19, 1945. Three days later, on April 22, 1945, they were notified of the death of their second son, Clarence Tammen, in Europe. A third son, Peter, came back from service in Europe. Their fourth and oldest son, Henry, stayed home to help on the family farm. All four brothers and two sisters are now deceased.

Our museum accepts and displays these uniforms, photos and stories with great honor. We thank niece Clarette Carls of Flanagan and other family members for entrusting us with these precious symbols of the shared sacrifice of American families during World War II.

Please come to our museum to see this display. Future visitors and students will now understand even more what "The Greatest Generation' accomplished and the meaning of the phrase "Freedom Isn't Free".

We had a special visit from these young students on Veterans Day. All of them have family members now serving in our military. We thank them also for bringing cards to hand out to veterans and to others serving our country now. Students at Central also made a "Heroes Wall" honoring family members and friends who are veterans. Thanks to teacher Brenda Thompson, whose son is in the military, and to our young visitors in the first grade!

Project America Run

Last evening our museum had the honor of a visit by Mike Ehredt of Driggs Idaho. Mike is a US Army veteran who is running solo and unsupported across America to honor and remember US servicemen and women who have sacrificed their lives in Iraq since 2003. He places an American flag with a soldier's name every mile along his route to honor them. Mike's run started May 1, 2010 at the Pacific Ocean in Oregon and is projected to end in mid-October in Rockland Maryland on the shores of the Atlantic Ocean. Mike is averaging 29 miles per day, for a total of 4522 miles. He is spending his nights with host families across the USA, and was hosted last night by the Three Roses Bed and Breakfast in Pontiac. Mike is pushing a jogging stroller to carry flags, supplies, and communications / emergency gear. He receives shipments every 10 days from the volunteers in Idaho.

Mike wrote on his blog: "Pontiac IL is home to the Livingston County War Museum, an absolute must-see display of mannequins and memorabilia".

Following his museum visit, the City of Pontiac, Pontiac Tourism and museum officers hosted a dinner for him at DeLongs Restaurant in downtown Pontiac. Mike ate well. He burns around 8000 calories a day!

Our best wishes to Mike! He made a great impression on us. Proceeds go to the Honoring Our Veterans organization of Jackson Hole, Wyoming - a 501c3 charity providing recreational and social rehabilitation for wounded veterans.

Sixty-six years ago, America's sons stormed the beaches of Normandy France along with our allies to begin the liberation of Europe from Nazi domination. My dad, Dalmain Estes, was one of those men who survived "Bloody Omaha Beach" whose sands
were covered with over 2000 men at the end of the day. This is a salute to him, to those who came home, and especially to those who didn't- to all the men and women who saved humanity in World War II.

LZ LAMBEAU - WISCONSIN'S SALUTE TO VIETNAM VETS

I had the honor of attending LZ LAMBEAU in Green Bay Wisconsin last weekend. It was a beautiful 3 day salute to Vietnam veterans and those who did not return, their families and friends. Over 75,000 people filled the parking lot and Lambeau Field - home of the Green Bay Packers. There were mini-reunions, lectures on the music and literature of the Vietnam era, live bands and singers, photo displays, military aircraft and equipment, and the "Big Map"- a vinyl map of Southeast Asia and the South China Sea stretched out on the Lambeau parking lot with all principal cities and American bases marked on it. Thousands of Vietnam vets signed their names, units, and left messages to those they left behind. It will be donated to the Wisconsin Veterans Museum in Madison.
Saturday evening brought an emotional and beautiful tribute to Vietnam vets inside Lambeau Field.
Over 2000 empty white chairs were set up on the field representing Wisconsin's losses. A Medal of Honor soldier, Gary Wetzel, spoke and the Wisconsin National Guard completely surrounded the field - first turning toward the field to salute the dead, then turning toward the stands to salute the veterans. The best part of the experience at LZ Lambeau for me was sharing these experiences with the sister and niece of my best friend in Vietnam, Bob Pulaski, who died at age 19 during our operations near the A Shau Valley in 1971. I will never forget him, nor the weekend at LZ Lambeau. Thank you Sandy and Kaley.

PONTIAC HIGH SCHOOL HISTORY CLASSES

Thanks to the Pontiac Township High School history department for arranging a very impactful field trip to our museum last week. Over two days, seven junior history classes had the opportunity to interact with twelve veterans on our staff. The students were studying the Vietnam war, but were also able to interview combat veterans of World War II and the Korean war, as well as other peacetime veterans. Our veterans were impressed by the students interest and enthusiasm for military history as students learned lessons impossible to learn by textbooks alone.

PEORIA COOPERATIVE ACADEMY VISIT

We are pleased that the Peoria Cooperative Academy visited us earlier this month. This is another example (after Astoria HS - 126 miles) of the growing influence and interest in our museum from schools outside Pontiac and Livingston County. Thanks to Ellen Lorentz and the other teachers for giving their students this opportunity. We were proud to assemble several of our World War II veterans to speak with the students. Museum President Jack Murphy welcomed them and then the students participated in individual small group interviews with each veteran of the Atlantic and Pacific theaters of war. Truly first-hand history from the men who made it!

IWO JIMA - FEB 19, 1945

On this day 65 years ago, the U.S. Marines launched the invasion of Iwo Jima - a small, barren Pacific island guarded by Japanese artillery. However, it was needed to build airfields for bombing raids against Japan, only 660 miles away.
As the Marines landed, seven Japanese battalions opened fire on them. At day's end, more than 550 Marines were dead; more than 1800 were wounded. The capture of Mt. Suribachi, the highest point on the island, took more than four more days with many more casualties. When the American flag was raised on Iwo Jima, this famous photo was taken. It later won the Pulitzer Prize. (Source: The History Channel)

Museum member and World War II veteran of the 65th Infantry Division, John Amm of Pontiac IL spoke at the Teaching the Holocaust and Global Genocide Conference at the McLean County Museum of History in Bloomington IL. John's division liberated the concentration camp at Ohrdruf, Germany - the first camp liberated by the Allies. The Conference was attended by approx. 150 high school history teachers from Central Illinois, including many new teachers. Museum President, Jack Murphy,introduced John at the Conference and urged these teachers and their classes to our museum to learn from our veterans from World War II to the present . CORNELL IL SCHOOL VISIT
